Латвия се присъединява към страните -членки на Европейския съюз на 1 май 2004г. след проведен през есента на 2003 г. референдум. Страната се присъединява към НАТО през март 2004 г. Член е на Шенгенско пространство от 2007 г., а еврото заменя бившата национална валута лат от 1 януари 2014 г.
